George T. Cherry, 80, of Coeur d' Alene, Idaho and formerly of Pawtucket, passed away Monday, September 1, 2008 at his home. He was the husband of Frances (Messier) Cherry.
Born on September 22, 1927 in Pawtucket, he was the son of the late James and Sarah (McNulty) Cherry. George was a life long resident of Pawtucket before moving to Coeur d' Alene, Idaho four years ago to be closer to his grandchildren.
George served in the U. S. Army on occupation duty of Japan from 1946 to his completion of service in 1947. Upon return from the service he later started the C&O Roofing Construction Company of Pawtucket and was a respected general contractor for over fifty years.
He was a past officer of the Pawtucket Boys Club, a proud member of the To Kalon Club, Pawtucket, a member of Saint Theresa Church, as well as its golf team and a member of St Thomas Church, Coeur d' Alene, Idaho.
He excelled at baseball as a youth and later in life golf and bowling (as many of his opponents can attest). He was a devoted, and thankfully a no longer suffering, Boston Red Sox fan.
Besides his wife of “43 glorious years”, he is survived by two sons, Sean Cherry and his wife Raini of Coeur d' Alene, Idaho and James Cherry of Sandpoint, Idaho; four sisters, Veronica Beaulieu of E. Providence, Theresa Nacci, Hazel Audette, and Jane Langlois, all of Pawtucket. A brother, Harold Cherry of New Hampshire, four grandchildren, Reilly, Tarryn, Reagan, and Avrey. He was the preceded in death by his daughter Dawn and son Joseph, his brothers James, Joseph and Edward Cherry, his sisters Mary Grezik, Eilene Land, and Alice Snow.
The funeral will be held Thursday, September 11, 2008 at 9AM from the Costigan-O'Neill Funeral Home, 220 Cottage Street, Pawtucket, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10am in Saint Teresa Church, 358 Newport Avenue, Pawtucket. Relatives and friends are invited. Burial will be private. Visiting hours are Wednesday, 5-8pm. At Costigan-O'Neill Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, donations to Hospice of North Idaho, 9493 N. Government Way, Coeur d' Alene ID, 83815, would be appreciated.
